I was amazed at some of the pre-draft deals that took place. Even more amazing, considering some of the names that moved. I don't think I've seen so many marquee names move in one day.
Some examples:
Calgary Flames Acquired goaltender Roman Turek and a 2001 fourth-round draft pick from the St. Louis Blues for goaltender Fred Brathwaite, center Daniel Tkaczuk, left wing Sergei Varlamov and 2001 ninth-round pick.
New York Islanders Acquired center Alexei Yashin from the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Zdeno Chara, right wing Bill Muckalt and the second overall pick in the 2001 draft.
Florida Panthers Acquired right wing Valeri Bure and center Jason Wiemer from the Calgary Flames for center Rob Niedermayer and a 2001 second-round draft pick.
Toronto Maple Leafs Acquired right wing Mikael Renberg from the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for left wing Sergei Berezin; announced that Renberg has agreed to a multi-year contract.
And there's still the remote possibility that Jagr, Lindros, and the likely possiblility that Roenick will be moving as well.
Next season's going to be wacky with all of the big names moving.

Hard to tell if I'm dissapointed. I think we got 2 talented young players who have a lot of upside. I also think the Islanders are insane. They may get a few more fans this year, but Yashin is a proven loser and is invisible in the playoffs. Peca and Isbiter do not a team make. Although it was good to get Yashin on the same team as Peca since Peca has always been able to eliminate Yashin from a game.

The Isles have more problems than they can count. They haven't made the playoffs in years. They're in a warehouse that masquerades itself as an arena (it's nickname on LI is the "Nassau Mausoleum"). They're losing money every year. They can't fill the seats in their home rink, even though it's among the smallest venues in the NHL. And they even had trouble selling the team to someone who actually had the money to buy it.
Having talented players are the least of their concerns, especially when you look at the way they've dealt all of their good, young talent away in the past few years. Palffy, Salo, Green, Schneider, McInnis... the list goes on and on. Half of these guys are now marquee players, and they were all on the team at the same time. Who did the Isles get in return for these players? Absolutely no one worthy of mention.

Detroit is looking good with Robitaille and Hasek. I gotta say that I will root for them, if Buffalo doesn't make it to the finals even though they are a Western team. I guess Original 6 trumps west anyway. I still am a Bowman fan as well as a Hasek fan. I just want to see what Hasek can do with more star forwards in front of him. Plus the cup would be back in Buffalo as that is where Scotty Bowman lives.
The loss of Turgeon must be devastating for Blues fans even with Weight. And to have Dallas add him and Audette. The weird thing is that Dallas tends to be rather defense minded and I don't think Turgeon or Audette are going to be that great on that type of team. At least their point totals will suffer, especially Audette's.
