Mineola, New York - A babysitter was sentenced Tuesday to 17 years behind bars for punching a toddler in the stomach, a punch that killed him. The family of the 3-year-old boy believes the sitter should serve more time.
Police said the babysitter, 42-year-old John Wyatt of Hempstead, brutally disciplined the child by punching him in the stomach for wetting his bed. This blow caused massive internal bleeding and ultimately killed the toddler, Tyjuan Mayo. In court Tuesday, the baby's family said Wyatt should get life in prison.
Wyatt plea-bargained the original murder charges down to manslaughter. He was then sentenced to 17 years in jail. Assistant District Attorney Robert Biancavilla said a murder charge would have been difficult to prove.
