The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray’s new LT1 6.2-liter V8 engine has been certified as the most powerful standard engine ever for the sports car, according to General Motors Co.

The new engine is SAE-certified at 455-horsepower and 460 pound-foot with the standard exhaust system, the Detroit-based automaker announced Tuesday.

“The 2014 Corvette Stingray’s LT1 engine is a triumph of advanced technology, delivering more power and torque than ever before with greater efficiency,” said Jordan Lee, small block chief engineer, in a statement.

The seventh-generation sports car – due out later this year – is expected to achieve more than 26 miles per gallon on the highway. Chevrolet estimates the Corvette will run from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds.

Still not enough power for you? With an optional performance exhaust system, the iconic slice of Americana is SAE-certified at 460-horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 465 pound-foot of torque at 4,600 rpm -- an increase of 24 horsepower and 37 pounds-foot of torque over today’s LS3 6.2-liter V8.
