Mazda and the U.S. EPA have released official fuel economy figures for the 2014 Mazda3 hatchback. When equipped with the 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine and the six-speed manual transmission, it sips 29 mpg in the city and 40 on the highway, or 8.1L/100 km in the city and 5.8 on the highway. Opt for the six-speed automatic and the hatch is expected to return 30 mpg in the city. Official numbers have not yet been released for the 2.5-litre SkyActiv mill, but Mazda expects to wring 28 mpg city and 37 highway, or 8.4 and 6.3, respectively.
Similarly, official numbers remain to be seen for the 3 sedan, but Mazda hopes it will be a touch more frugal. City fuel economy figures are identical to the hatch with the 2.0-litre engine and six-speed manual, but Mazda estimates the 3 sedan at 41 mpg on the highway, or 5.7L/100 km. In any case, the mileage differences between the two are negligible. The 2.0-litre SkyActiv engine is good for 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5-litre pumps out 184-hp and 185 lb-ft of torque.
