OUTLOOK, Wash. — Fireworks thrown from a freeway overpass may have started a fire that destroyed a tractor-trailer rig loaded with 50,000 pounds of french fries on Interstate 82.
The driver, Tommie Hayes, 39, of Orlando, Fla., and his 14-year-old son, Taylor, heard an explosion that sounded as if a tire were blowing up about 10:45 p.m. Monday, Hayes said.
He pulled over about a half-mile later and discovered the truck was on fire.
“My mind was on, ‘Get my son out of the truck,”’ he said.
The Hayeses had been shopping for school clothes in Kennewick a short while earlier and lost all their belongings in the blaze.
Trooper Tom Mortensen of the Washington State Patrol said there were reports throughout that evening of someone throwing fireworks or firecrackers from the Outlook overpass, but no one was found.
