Does this work with a free ssl certificate too? I can't seem to get it work?

 
No this will not work with a free SSL cert.

You will need a paid one. Specifically this actual seal works with AlphaSSL by GlobalSign. You can order these SSL certificates directly through our control panel at a slight discount,

 
Yes you would. A trust seal is not included with a free SSL cert as they must be validated by the certificate authority.

Do I need to pay for ssl secure site seal then?
Yes of course you definitely have to pay for it. The services is not free of charge as it tends to offer a sense of security to your website visitors for them to trust you website.
