NAIROBI (Reuters) - Forty-two aid agencies in Kenya said Wednesday the international community had responded inadequately to food appeals for the east African country and warned that the drought situation had become desperate. More than 4 million Kenyans are at risk of starvation but very few pledges have been made so far to an appeal for $89 million by the Kenyan government and the U.N.'s World Food Program (WFP) in February, the agencies said in a joint statement.

WFP, whose emergency operation in Kenya is the organization's third largest in the world, has warned that food supplies could run out by the end of the month.

"This has been the worst drought that Kenya has faced in living memory," said Emma Naylor, humanitarian program coordinator for Oxfam Great Britain.
