VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Reuters) - An animal rights group that got in hot water for planning ads that appeared to defend shark attacks has launched a new campaign that suggests people should eat whales.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) unveiled a billboard in downtown Vancouver this week that pictures a cartoon chicken and cow painting the sign with the message; "Eat the Whales."
The group said it opposes whale hunting but wanted to draw attention to the fact that many people get upset at the idea of killing whales but do not object to eating meat from chickens, cows and other land animals.
"Some people who blubber about harpooning whales don't hesitate to snag buckets of chicken wings," PETA's vegan campaign coordinator Andrew Butler said in a press release, which suggests whales are a more efficient food source.
