Another bloody anthrax scare...a little closer to home

The local post office was closed off for a few hours this afternoon, with police and firefighters everywhere and some hazardous material response unit from the fire department. It's supposed to have been yet another anthrax hoax...****s.

The hoaxers are a pain in the rear aren't they? It makes me soooo mad!! I don't see what the kick is. It's just a moronic thing to do. We've had a lot of them here in the states as well. I wish the government would make it a mandatory 5 year jail term for people pulling this crap.

I don't know what to think about this one... on the local news Sunday, they had a piece on a powdery substance found in a motel room in N. Carolina. The reporter said that the substance had been tested 3 times, and 2 of the 3 times, the tests came back postive for anthrax. Since that report... nothing! I even went to there website to look up the story - nothing at all to even recognize that they had even reported the story! I wonder if the government hushed it up... or if it was a hoax and they were embarassed by their reporting? Either way - it's wrong to leave people just hanging like that. ARRGH!

Ugh, that's weird. If they made a mistake, they should at least admit it. Over here we've introduced some pretty tough punishments for anyone found guilty of anthrax hoaxes - even more remarkable considering how the Australian system is renowned for it's ridiculous leniency.

Actually, one prankster now faces life imprisonment for his anthrax joke. I would post the link if I could find it.

There's a guy in one of Boston's surrounding towns who was arrested for putting white powder around the office. The charge was something like "Threatening to use weopons of mass destruction."

in cleveand, some woman sent her boyfriend baby powder through the mail to scare him. that letter got jammed in the machines and shut down the post office and all of the stuff that goes with that.

now, while i find doing this as revenge to an ex quite hilarious is theory, i cannot believe anyone would actually do this.

By the way PIT, how does this thread rate the subject "a little closer to home" given that most of the members here are Americans, and the terrorist attacks and the real anthrax cases are in the States?

I could see if the title was something like "Anthrax scares spreading across the globe" or "Anthrax scares have made it to Australia", but "a little closer to home"? That's a bit self-absorbed, IMO. You have no idea how it feels to be in this country with all this scary stuff happening. And granted, I'm extremely thankful I don't live somewhere even more dangerous, but I think you're pretty much in the clear.

And if you're not in the clear, I guess the Australian troops better hurry up and take out Osama bin Laden since the Americans are too **** slow at doing it.

I don't think it's being too self-absorbed.
The anthrax attacks in America are on the other side of the world. It's not that much different to what you would feel if genocide was happening in Kosovo or Somalia. Because we're an ally of the U.S., it's a little more scary, but not by much. So yes, for me, it was 'a little closer to home'

Now, secondly, you've just contradicted yourself there. You whinge about how awful it is to have anthrax flying around, etc, then in the same breath, defend Bush's procrastination, and therefore defend the freedom of Osama Bin Laden to keep attacking America.

First of all, Americans don't "whinge". I don't even know what the heck that word means.

And I wouldn't say I'm defending Bush's procrastination. As a matter of fact, I think he's doing way too much militarily. But that wasn't my point. I was being sarcastic, and saying that if you're so impatient for the American troops to hurry up and get the job done, and if Australians might be in danger too, why aren't Australian troops hurrying up and getting the job done?
In light of that, your comments about contradiction make no sense. The point you concluded was not the point I was making, and that stuff is a whole different debate, which I think we have been through already in a different thread.

We can't do it because we don't have the military forces. And the countries that do (Russia, Turkey, Israel) are all being held back by Bush's procrastination.

How do you know you don't do it, if you don't know what it means
