OK, I've got a 19-inch Viewsonic A75s, that I bought in May 2000. I run it at 1024x768, and up until the end of December it was usually on for 1-4 hours a day, since then it's been on usually from 10 am to 7 pm or so, while I look for a job. Last week it started making this LOUD high-pitched noise (bad enough that I couldn't stand it and would have to turn off the monitor). It doesn't do it as soon as I turn on the computer - it usually has been on for at least 4 hours when it starts up with this crap. When it starts, it only makes the noise when there is a lot of white, or at least a lot of light-color on the screen (such as with IE or Eudora). If I have everything minimized and am only using ICQ, for example, it's quiet until I maximize my e-mail or something. However, as the day goes by the conditions that make the monitor make this noise become less and less, until it makes the noise continuously, and I can't stand it so I just shut down the machine for the day.

I finally located the receipt for this yesterday, so I'll probably be calling Viewsonic this week, but was just wondering if any of you out there have ever experienced this, and whether it's going to be curtains for my monitor

(It has a 3 year warranty so I'm fine there but GEEEEEEEEZ I haven't had it that long!)

Now and then I'll get a similar sort of thing on my 21" Viewsonic P810 model. It was purchased as a refurbished unit near the Christmas of 1998. It hasn't acted up until around a year and a half later. It's more of a softer high-pitched noise though. But it is enough to drive one crazy. I haven't noticed any particulat pattern as to why/when it happens. Sometimes it'll happen when I first turn it on after not being used since the previous day, and other times it'll happen after being used for quite some time.

My usual ways of fixing the issue (removing the symptom) is to turn it off and then back on. That seems to work around 85% of the time. Now this next fix sounds white-trashish but it works, the other 15% of the time giving it a slap or two on the side seems to work.

In your situation, I'd give a call to Viewsonic.

I had a 19" Viewsonic that had the same problem. I live close to a television repair shop, so I took the monitor into them. They told me that the capacitor was weak and needed to be replaced. I let them replace it. They charged me $45 for parts and labor. Haven't had the problem return, and it's been about 1.5 years now.

Actually, my bf was looking at it the other day, and when he tilted the screen at certain angles, the monitor would shut off. So it looks like there might be some kind of short in it, whatever ELSE might be wrong with it.

Still been too lazy to call Viewsonic, but I'll do that one of these days.
