Ashcroft’s behavior before the judiciary committee resembled nothing so much as Bill Clinton’s behavior before the Paula Jones grand jury. But its Clintonian qualities were overlooked--and Ashcroft’s performance was deemed a success--because the press had already determined Ashcroft’s problem to be extremism, not dishonesty.
