JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Ehud Barak says he will not step down from the Israeli leadership race despite trailing right-winger Ariel Sharon in the polls and facing a groundswell of support for elder statesman Shimon Peres.
Barak's found himself defending his candidacy again amid rumours he may yet step aside before a Friday deadline to let fellow Labour Party member Peres run in the February 6 prime ministerial poll.
