Considering the state of affairs right now, what is the best? Of course, there can be more than one answer. Anyway, myself, I am not too particular. In fact, I think all of the major brands can be modified with varying degrees of work to do what you want.

Honestly they haven't really changed much in recent years, free still goes to Jcink and Mybb, paid goes to Xenforo. No one has yet to top Wordpress for blog software.

What makes them better?

Mybb can be hard to use, but in general those listed are easy to use and user-friendly and not as expensive as others like IPB. Jcink also provides support on a level that most people get from a paid service which is really good.

Does Jcink make money thru some back way? I mean a situation where they sell themes or something. That's a smart biz strategy some people use.

Best free is MyBB, though it's slow moving. Flarum is a great option, too, but difficult to setup. There's also the old standard of phpBB, never goes wrong. On the paid side, it's still XenForo, by a hair, IPS is a great option, too, but XF right now has the edge.

When it comes to forum software I would have to say that in terms of free, MyBB and Jcink are the ones that hit the top and for paid Xenforo blows all the others out of the park.

WordPress is still the best blog software

MyBB has the most mods I think and the situation of being non-mobile friendly is easily fixed with a free theme. Why do you figure some don't like MyBB?

Having used MyBB myself, if I were to go based on why I prefer that as a free option for forum software, I would say because it is the one forum software that is the closest to something such as Xenforo.

I think the most popular forum software is Xenforo by far. I however own 1 Xenforo license and 2 InVision Community forum software. And I prefer InVision Community by far because it's an all-in-one forum software. No need to buy a portal, gallery, blog, ecommerce, downloads etc. it's all there. And for blog software it's WordPress all the way, WordPress has no completion in my book.
