LONDON, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A British hospital has apologized for telling a black patient due to have a leg amputated she'd have to pay for anything other than a white artificial limb.
Ingrid Nicholls was told she'd have to pay for an artificial limb if she wanted it to match her skin color. She said she was stunned when she was told limbs "only come in pink" and it would cost nearly $4,800 if she wanted a different color.
She told the London Mirror: "I looked at them and said, 'But obviously I will have one to match my leg color'. But he said, 'I'm afraid not, they only come in pink shades and if you want anything else you have to pay for it yourself'.'."
A single mother of-three, Nicholls lives in Reading with her 11-year-old youngest son. She said: "What are his friends going to say to him with a mum like that? Kids can be cruel."
