You thought the false widow spider was bad...but now the deadly black widow has arrived in Britain

The venomous arachnids have arrived by boat from the United States - and they're very dangerous indeed

Venomous black widow spiders are invading Britain - and they're far MORE dangerous than their false widow cousins.

The eight-legged critters, capable of killing humans, are arriving from the US by boat and have been spotted several times on these shores.

Ecologist Graeme Skinner told the Daily Star: "Black widows have come this year.

"They managed to survive on shipments from the States.

"On two occasions it was just a single one but on another we had six black widows come in together.

"We had one batch come in stuck underneath a camper van from Arizona."

The black widow spiders - which live across America - are infamous for their gruesome mating rituals.

After mating, the female often eats her unfortunate partner, explaining how the spiders came to be named black widows.

While the female's venom is extremely potent, and requires medical treatment, it doesn't usually kill healthy humans.

However, children and the elderly are at risk, and the most lethal spider bites in the world do come from the black widow.

If bitten by a black widow spider, you can expect pain, cramping, and tremors.

Victims may also experience nausea, fainting, and problems with their breathing.

The article about the false widow mentions a street which is literally 20 seconds from my house. Scary right?

Anyway, I've not had a phobia of spiders, but I've always tried to avoid them, so I think I'll be fine. Window is closed during winter (that's when they come inside houses mainly) and I always check briefly around room. Still scary though.

Saw a comment on the article which made me giggle and relates to the thread of political correctness not too long ago:

We're not allowed to call it the Black Widow anymore...
Now it's The Recently Bereaved Arachnid Of Ethnic Minority Origin.

OT: apparently false widows are mostly found in the South East. A guy in Essex actually almost lost his leg because of a False Widow - I know children and the elderly are mostly at risk with Black Widows, but if a False Widow can almost take a middle-aged man's leg, imagine what a Black Widow can do... D:
I wouldn't have thought Black Widows would have been able to survive our climate long, though I'm pretty sure we've had them coming in for years before now... especially as people found them in their Tesco grapes (apparently being used as pesticides in California as they lower the amount of insects). Though I'm sure they've been found in Banana cargo and such brought over to the country.
