You might well ask why it has taken so long for BMW to introduce a four-wheel drive version of its 3 Series Touring.
After all, the Munich marque has been making wagons for a very long time. It has also been offering a sophisticated four-wheel drive system, rive, on its crossover models since 2003.
Given rive is largely engineered to enhance dynamics on-road rather than off, you would think the two would have been deemed a natural fit a long time ago.
You would be correct. In fact, four-wheel drive 3 Series models are nothing new for BMW. It has produced them since 1987 in Europe or with rive for the best part of a decade. What is new, however, is a 3 Series rive for export in right-hand drive. So welcome
