Though I am not a religious follower, I know a lot of most religions.
What I am about to share with you, not many people know.
People who look at Buddhists think that Buddha himself should not be looked upon as a "god" or "spiritual figure" because he is fat, and in order to reach Nirvana you must share your wealth, be one with nature, and initially starve yourself at one point in time. Well, Buddha is not actually fat, morbidly obese, or even slightly anything but bone and skin. Buddha was the first one to reach Nirvana, and was actually extremely under wait. He starved himself to the point of Nirvana.
The reason they portray him to be fat is basically because in their times fat meant wealthy, and being the great Buddha, and initially the start of the religion, they wished for him to be something greater than just a man, but a rich man. "you may be poor during the living, but be a great hero, and you will be rich in the after life" This is what they did, they made him look wealthy.
