CALGARY (Reuters) - The murky case of a "secret agent" allegedly hired by Canada's main opposition party to ferret out government misdeeds became more confused on Monday with the opposition leader denying he had met the man after saying previously he had.
The Globe and Mail newspaper said on Saturday that the man, described as a former U.S. government employee, had been retained by the Canadian Alliance party to "get the goods" on Prime Minister Jean Chretien and his Liberal government.
The article prompted a storm of protest and a zig-zag reaction from Canadian Alliance leader Stockwell Day, who first said a meeting had taken place and then appeared to change his mind -- blaming the Globe and Mail for misleading him.
"I mistakenly assumed that the reporter had done the due diligence and actually got confirmation from a member of Parliament that I had in fact met this particular individual," Day told a news conference on Monday.
