Could a real Jurassic Park be far behind?

I have to say I think there's a reason the big guy upstairs made those things extinct. I don't like this cloning stuff.

We really shouldn't be playing with this. This is really messed up...

What's even more messed up is their online poll:

What's your opinion on the idea of reviving extinct species through cloning?

It's unnatural and should not be attempted.
22%

It's not morally wrong, but it probably would never work.
4%

It should be pursued, and it just might work.

None of the above (share your view on the Science News BBS).

Just cause I feel like babbling and some may not feel like reading the whole article, it's kind of important to get this out there cause it really is sad...

The gist is, they have a 1866 Tazmanian Tiger (6 months old), (a species which has been instinct since 1936) preserved in alcohol. Small samples were extracted from the 'pup' in April to unravel the tiger's genetic code, for preparation of cloning.

Once DNA damage is assessed and repaired, they will begin inserting the tiger's genetic blueprint into the waiting egg of a Tazmanian Devil or the Numbat, it's closest relatives, for incubation.

They say it might not work, but it's inevitable we'll find out.

In response to the scientist 'playing God', as accused by many people, his response was:

“My response is that people played God when we exterminated the animal in the first place,”.

I think it's neat in theory that it can be done, but I certainly don't want the world populated with genetically engineered people or animals. The plants I can understand a bit more because it's helping people eat and stuff, but otherwise, leave the poor little dead wolf alone.

Well I'm sure that in a hundred years cloning may be a necessary and approved option in medical treatment, but I feel that our society as a whole is way too immature and foolish to be playing God like this.

Did anyone see Gataca? I don't wanna wind up picking everything from my kid's eye color to penis size, ya know? That's f*cked up.

Read it. I found it to be a **** good book if not horrifying. I'll have to pick up a copy, I'd like to read it again.

This is creepy. Scientists, government and corporations are certainly not mature enough to handle the power that exists within cloning. On the other hand it would be great to be able to see extinct animals such the Tazmanian Tiger, dodo bird or carier pigeon. There are a lot of ethical problems here. Is it right to create an animal just to put it in a zoo? People already have problems with putting living animals in zoos, but to make an animal with the express purpose of being locked in a zoo is problematic. How about creating an animal for work or companionship? Already, I have seen adds for places that will take your pets DNA and save it for when their gone and cloning is readily available.

If you wanna talk cloning in literature, I think A Brave New World is more applicable than 1984. However, both were very good books.
