I had to redo my pencil trick this afternoon on my T-bird 800, and when I went to put the heatsink back on, I distinctly heard a sound akin to crunching broken pieces of glass underfoot. Well, needless to say that once my system would no longer boot, I didn't need to remove the heatsink to realize that I had basically cracked the core of my CPU.

At the very least, this gives me an excuse to upgrade to the 1GHz club, and the new CPU should be on the way shortly.

As soon as I get my system back on it's feet, I'll post pictures of the broken CPU, before I turn it into a keychain.

Eep, major suckage. At least you can take it in stride. I'd be hunched over in a corner, spouting jibberish and rocking side to side.

Eek! But I know how you feel. I have a keychain from February of 2000, an Athlon 550Mhz cpu -- caused from the **** Artic Cooler that bolts onto the Slot-A processor.

I'll soon be upgrading to a 1.2Ghz+ TBird. I just pray I dont make another keychain. Which HSF were you using?

That does suck. Those cores are SOOOOOOO fragile, anymore. I think I'd get my board, processor, and HSF at the same place...and get it burned in before they ship it. Just the things are a bit too touchy, from what I've read.

Just out of curiosity, anyone know what kind of drill bit I would need to drill a hole in the corner of the processor in order to make it into a keychain? Better that than throwing the thing in the trash.

unfortuantly cracking cores is becoming quite common.. what i do and a lot of people suggest is to bend the clip a little to lessen the tension...

WaterB> That would probably work, but aside from the manufacturers addressing this problem, which is much more common than they want to admit, I think the best fix is a copper spacer, which ensures good cooling AND equal, even pressure across the entire surface of the core, instead of just on the edge or corner where most crack.

Dan, which sort of copper-spacer have you decided to use? Also which heatsink compound are you planning to use with the copper-spacer? Had heard the need to use non-conductive thermal paste on the copper spacer so it wont cause any issues if it leaks over onto the L1-L6 bridges. Normal thermal compound is partially conductive and that it would interfer with the L1 pencil trick.

Have you considered using Trace Tape (http://www.plycon.com/trace.htm) on your next-cpu; seems like it should prevent the need to re-apply the pencil trick.

I'm still undecided on which copper-shim to use and not sure which thermal-paste to use with it.

The copper spacer I got is from www.2cooltek.com, and doesn't require non-conductive paste since it's cut to make way for all of the external electronic components and the pads.

I've bought a lot of cooling equipment from 2CoolTek before, and it's always worked great.
In comparison, I saw the one from Plycon, and not only does it cost more, but clearly the design is not as well thought out, hence the need for non-conductive paste.

Also, I'm using Artic Silver as my thermal compound.

The Trace Tape from Plycon is a nice idea, but I don't see how it could be justified to charge $23 for essentially some well placed traces on a piece of scotch tape.

hehe.. funny how this guy i talk to on irc thinks different about 2cooltek.. he ordered something 2 weeks ago and got a tracking #.. after waiting the 5-10 days he went to track his package and found that it was shipped to MA instead of NY.. he's been emailing them forever and they haven't been responding

WaterB&gt; They're a good company, but they can make mistakes like anybody else. It's a small company run by one person and a shipping clerk.
I've placed about a dozen orders with them in the past year, and everything arrived promptly and well packed. I wish they had more shipping options than just the USPS, but that keeps costs down at the same time.

I have no hesitation in recommending them for cooling supplies. There will always be a few disgruntled customers here and there for any company, but I think, by and large, you'll find that 2CoolTek has a very solid reputation.

hey.. i'm not saying their bad.. i just enjoy the differences of opinions between customers of the same store.. we had a big discussion about tcwo which i really like but others weren't satisfied w/ their customer serverice.. it was funny to me to see Dan and this other guy's difference of opinion because i had just been in a heated debate just moments before

heh, next time you have an argument with the guy, point him to Reseller Ratings.
I don't think I've ever seen a shop with that many votes with a rating that high.

I've ordered from them in the past multiple times. This was when I first heard of them, somewhere around January 2000. I've also placed another order with them around July 2000. I would not hesitate to order from them again, and probably will do so within the month.
