LONDON (Reuters) - Fed up with a commuter car being parked outside your house? Phone the police and they will blow it up for you.
A caller believed to be a disgruntled London resident warned police about a suspect vehicle. Worried about public safety after a spate of suspected Irish Republican bombings in London, police responded swiftly by blowing up the car, reported to be a 20,000 pounds Alfa Romeo.
"The vehicle was deemed to be suspicious and steps were taken to make it safe," a Scotland Yard spokeswoman said.
The "controlled explosion" caused commuter chaos as parts of key underground lines were closed and roads shut at the height of the Monday evening rush hour while police swooped on the car. Nearby houses were evacuated.
