For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a box by the state. It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets and toys that can even be used as a bed. And some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates.

It's a tradition that dates back to the 1930s and it's designed to give all children in Finland, no matter what background they're from, an equal start in life.

The maternity package - a gift from the government - is available to all expectant mothers.

It contains bodysuits, a sleeping bag, outdoor gear, bathing products for the baby, as well as nappies, bedding and a small mattress.

With the mattress in the bottom, the box becomes a baby's first bed. Many children, from all social backgrounds, have their first naps within the safety of the box's four cardboard walls.

i think it's absolutely amazing! not only is it full of things all babies need right off the bat- it helps expectant mothers know exactly what the baby needs, and gives it to them.(: not only that- but it's all gender neutral. there is no 'pink for girl' or 'blue for boy'. which i think is equally impressive, given that here in the states that's what you're stuck with.
i think this is something ALL countries should adopt- it ensures a great start to a life.(:
you go, finland. you rock!!

what are your guys' thoughts on this?(: think it's possible for other governments to adopt?

They do something similar in the UK I believe; you have to fill out a form and send it somewhere and they give you small samples of stuff like Sudocrem, nappies etc. Of course, the deeper meaning behind it is that companies get to advertise their products, but it's still a useful thing to have. Shame we don't have what the Finnish do though.

Also, why am I not surprised it's Finland?
