BBC, June 4, 2013 -- River levels in the Czech Republic have risen sharply overnight after the authorities were forced to open several dams in the south of the country.

In the capital Prague, metal flood barriers are being raised to cope with the extra water on the River Vltava.

Severe floods caused by days of heavy rain have left at least seven people dead in the Czech Republic, and two others in neighbouring Austria.

Germany has drafted in the army to help reinforce flood defences in the south.

In the Bavarian town of Passau, floodwaters have now reached a level not seen since the 16th Century, making much of the town inaccessible.

Yesterday, the water levels in Passau reached a 500-year high. Over night, the levels have dropped, however. In Eastern Germany, the levels are still rising.

In the city/town where I live, a road to a neighboring city/town was closed off on Saturday due to flooding (I live close to the Rhine river).

Absolutely shocking seeing this, and knowing the amount of deaths it is causing is just awful. It does make you wonder what the world is coming to, to be honest and just how bad things really will start getting knowing we get things like this now and they seem to have got worse over the last few years.

Severe flooding is threatening the north of the Czech Republic, with residents are being evacuated from the town of Melnik where the rivers Vltava and Elbe converge.

In the capital, Prague, the risk of further flooding appears to be receding, though many residential areas are still underwater and the metro system is closed.
