LONDON (Reuters) - French underwater explorer Franck Goddio Tuesday unveiled his first complete underwater map of the sunken ancient city of Alexandria.

In 1996, Goddio discovered the fabled city quarters which had been lost for more than 1,000 years.

Since then, the underwater archeologist has worked with experts to map out the harbor with its palaces, temples and the famous royal island of Antirhodos.

"We were amazed to find fabulous things," he told a news conference at the British Museum, which is displaying one of the most startling finds -- a bust believed to be of Caesarion, the son of Cleopatra and Julius Caesar.

Presenting his map of the long hidden world, he said: "Soon after the first electronic surveys of the harbor, we realized that the topography of the ancient quarters of Alexandria was totally different from what had been assumed until now."
