I guess you don't really need a hero, but a goal to reach is possibly quite high up in requirements as otherwise the story isn't going to get very far.

Heroes and quests are all well and good... but why are they going on said quest? Also, are we discussing actual videogame RPGs, or tabletop RPGs, or what? Because there's a major difference in requirements.
