Good rpg story?

What does a good rpg story needs to have? A hero and quest and what else?

RPG stories can contain anything - best ones hold great character depth, however. I guess you don't really need a hero, but a goal to reach is possibly quite high up in requirements as otherwise the story isn't going to get very far.

A reason. Heroes and quests are all well and good... but why are they going on said quest?

Also, are we discussing actual videogame RPGs, or tabletop RPGs, or what? Because there's a major difference in requirements.
