ELKHART -- A man named Nimrod was caught stealing a gumball machine from a business Thursday morning, according to police.

Elkhart Cpl. Marvin Johnson reported officers were sent to an alarm at the Sudsy Coin-Op Laundramat, 406 Middlebury St., at about 8:30 a.m. Johnson saw that a door had been kicked in. He walked around the building to find Nimrod Morgan carrying a candy machine out the door.

Johnson said he asked Morgan for some identification.

"He dropped the gumball machine and he ran into 725 (Monroe St.)," Johnson said.

Johnson chased Morgan into the building, where he tried to detain him.

"I had a hold of him for a while, but he was able to get away," Johnson said.

Morgan, who wasn't wearing a shirt, had blood and sweat on him and slipped out of the officer's grasp, Johnson said.

Officers searched the area for a while but were unable to find him. A while later, Johnson got a phone call.

"The apartment complex called me and said they had seen blood on a door at 725 (Monroe) apartment A," Johnson said.

The building manager knew no one was supposed to be in that apartment, Johnson said. A maintenance man let officers inside and they found Morgan lying on a bed.
