Gun control deal breaker

The idea of expanded background checks for prospective gun owners is quickly becoming the battleground in Congress for any changes in national weapons control legislation. In nearly a dozen national polls from varying organizations, an overwhelming large number of people seem in favor of more background checks on gun owners.

What do you think of this? Do you believe background checks could ever been effective at gun control?

Personally, I think that having more thorough background checks can only be a good thing; I can't see there being any problem having them. I wouldn't call it a "deal breaker" though, because there would have to be other measures in place to ensure people are safe to be sold weapons. I know assault weapons are now banned (or they're thinking about it, can't remember which) and the article suggests they're focusing on devoting more resources to mental health problems, but do you think there could be other ways to ensure gun control is made safe?

Whatever the case, Obama and his administration sure do seem to be cracking down on this issue.

i love how you're not even in america and you posted this, kirk lmao(:

i actually shoot and own guns myself, so i know the process and i feel it's pretty well-balanced. adding more background checks, i feel, is pretty okay! the only problem i'd have is that i've heard rumours that if a mental disorder diagnosis is found in the background check it'll revoke the gun purchase. this is a very personal concern as i myself have a few hefty disorders that hold quite a bit of 'crazy weight' in just the name. i'd rather not have something that i honestly need for protection (and quite frankly it's fun) taken away just because i'm 'nuts', when i have absolutely no urge to harm anyone, not even myself, with any gun i've ever held in my hands. this is especially worrying due to the recent school shootings, the shooters are claimed to have mental disorders as well, which honestly doesn't bode well given the majourity of the population doesn't understand that not all disorders lead to violent behaviour.
in my experience, those who purchase guns legally are generally extraordinarily cautious and safe when they handle their guns! those who'll use guns to harm will generally steal someone else's or get it from the black market, haha.

I had to laugh at the argument that back ground checks are a violation of civil rights. I can't begin to count how many back ground checks I had to agree to when I went on a job. Even when the job was just temporary. Funny how this is a non issue when it comes to a person seeking employment but it becomes an issue when a person is seeking to buy a gun. What's wrong with this picture. If people can be asked to agree to a back ground check when they are applying for work, why shouldn't they be made to agree to one when purchasing a gun. I think this comes down to the gun shows. It has been stated that having to do this back ground checks could hinder sales at these shows, and these types of shows can bring in major capital. Somehow I have a feeling that this is the reason the NRA is so against this bill. After all why should anyone have issue with a back ground check, I never have, after why would you if you have nothing to hide.
