A bit of Aussie politics now...
Labor (Australia's version of the Democrats) has just won the state of Western Australia at their state election! Western Australia has almost never been Labor-held because it's mostly rural areas, and rural people tend to vote for the Liberal party (Australia's answer to the Republicans). What's more, the Labor leader over there was pretty hopeless, and one of the most uncharismatic people they've had in a long time, and he's beaten one of Australia's longest-serving state premiers.
Furthermore, this has massive implications for the Australian federal election in six months time. The Liberal federal government (which has been widely criticised for being the most far-right government in Australian history) has introduced a whole heap of legislation which has had a massive effect on the Australian poor - a goods and services tax system, pulling enormous amounts of funding from public schools and putting it into some of the wealthiest schools in the country, bashing workers rights, and most of all, been responsible for an almighty hike in the price of petrol through excise increases, when Australia makes all of it's own fuel anyway. What's even more...they said they were putting it into road funding...then three billion went missing...but that's another story...
Anyway, despite all they've done, they were tipped to win, because Labor's federal leader is pretty hopeless. But this election result in Western Australia signals a drastic change of fortune for Australia. We can only hope.
