National Hurricane center reports:

NOTE...IN ADDITION TO THE STORM SURGE FLOODING...RECENT REPORTS INDICATE THAT STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS HAVE EMPTIED THE BAY OF CHETUMAL AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN WALKING ACROSS THE BAY.

DEADLY STORM SURGE POSSIBLE IN THE BAY OF CHETUMAL
STORM SURGE FLOODING OF 9 TO 12 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS

That bay is approximately ~35 miles long and ~15 miles wide at it's narrowest point the best I can make out from these maps:

Can you imagine a surge of water ~12 ft higher than normal sea level rushing back into that bay if it iss empty?

That is of biblical proportions

Eek! Although, I think that'd be more akin to Moses walking across the Red Sea than Noah's Ark..

Actually, I watched a special on the Discovery Channel on hurricanes, and they discussed the scenario of a Cat. 3 Hurricane or greater striking NYC. Let's just say that Manhattan would become completely submerged due to the storm surge. How's that for biblical proportions? Talk about the Red Sea (Moses) meets Soddom and Gamorha (sp).
