how did your garden do this year?

My tomato plants where so beautiful but they are looking dead now.

My basil is being eaten by some bug. My SIL suggested putting a mint plant near them. So far the mint plant is not too big yet so it hasn't worked.

I have peppers. I don't even like peppers but they survived the heat and all the rain.

Awful, to much rain, I don't even wanna get near it mosquites are terrible.

Mine didn't go so well this year. I had lots of lettuce earlier in the summer -- then it got too hot and it got bitter so I pulled it out. I had beautiful tomato plants, but the a$$hole deer came and ATE the tomato plants and young tomatoes/blossoms and knocked the rest of the plants down. I don't know what's going on with the cucumber plants but I don't have a single cucumber growing .. lots of blossoms but no cucumbers. I also planted butternut squash and zucchini, but they didn't make it.

Not so good this year and I had such high hopes : (

Mine sucks!! So disappointed! All that time wasted. I just now got a flower on my watermelon?!?! What the hell?

We planted stuff in pots. I have never grown anything before, so I guess I'll consider what we have a sucess. Our lettuce and carrots grew and were tasty. It looks as though we have two cucumbers growing now, however, I don't know if they will get super big b/c i don't think we have enough sunlight. We also have one lonely jalapeno growing and possibly a few more coming along. I think we also have a few green peppers starting to grow also. I think everything is late in growing, b/c we transplanted the little plants too late. I'm hoping the neighbor kid does a good job watering them b/c I want some veggies when we get back.

Tomatoes are doing great...all the blooms fell off my bell pepper plants during the bad heat wave...they're just blooming again...nothing happening with the pumpkins...everbearing strawberries did not everbear...bugs got the goosestrife...was too hot to spray...at least no slugs this year...

Our tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, garlic, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries did/are doing pretty well.

Our strawberries got eaten by bugs. Not good. And the **** squirrels ate every single peach off our beautiful Saturn peach tree. And the few they didn't eat, they knocked down to the ground and they got eaten by ants or other bugs. So mad about the peaches. They are so tasty and would have been so delcious. **** squirrels. :-(

I don't know, since I don't know when to pull them up. :(

I think my mustard greens are ready, except I don't eat them. I pulled up one beet plant and there was nothing on the bottom of it last week. My lone watermelon plant has a size of a melon ball on it.

Spaghetti aquash is the big winner this year. Our first time growing it. I planted one hill and it is taking over the garden and sprawling into the yard. There must be 10+ babies now. Anyone have great recipes for spaghetti squash?? We do have a powdery mildew problem from all this rain... not sure what that will do.

The yellow crookneck squash is doing pretty well. Our zucchini plants are enormous but we've only gotten one fruit so far. We have a decent size melon, but the plant is kind of puny. The beets did much better this season and the swiss chard must be record size. Basil, snap peas, broccoli and cabbage have been a big disappointment. I may have to buy extra basil to make pesto this year. Green bean production is not so great, but holding on. Kohlrabi was fun to try and delicious! I will definitely grow it again. Cherry tomatoes are doing fine, but it is not a bumper year for them.

Mine seems to be growing well. Tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, brocoli, and zucchini!

Broccoli question....at what point to they start to grow the flower bunches? I planted a little broccoli for the first time this year. I have only 2 good sized plants, so I won't get much, but one of them is about 2 feet tall with huge leaves and no sign what-so-ever of the flowers starting. Any thoughts or suggestions?

The rest of the garden...
Tomatoes are doing great...loved the heat and rain
Cucumbers...not so good...I think the neighbor girl overwatered when we were gone. Usually by this time I'm giving cukes away. We only seem to have enough for us to eat and the vines are not looking good.
Peppers...2 plants, one pepper actually growing, so not good.
Basil...possibly the best year ever. I finally got smart and moved the pot to a shadier area so the leaves didn't burn and the plants have still been producing nicely. I have more coming up in the garden that I'll transplant to containers to bring indoors for the fall.
Strawberries...used the topsy turvey and followed directions. Maybe I bought the wrong kind of berries, but I thought I had the everbaring variety...they didn't
Cantaloupe...this is a first for us. Seemed to take a long time to get started, but now the vines are spilling out into the yard and have several small, fuzzy green fruits on them. I'm excited!

I did not get my vegetable garden in this year. I am babying my neighbor's garden of tomato and peppers (they plant every year and then ignore it, I take care of it, harvest & we share) and this survived the heat OK and will produce soon.

In herbs I had rosemary that did very well, my parsley burned but is coming back, I am DROWNING in oregano, I am going to harvest this soon and dehydrate it in the freezer. My basil was totally eaten by black beetles so I hacked it all back to the stumps and planted about 20 matchsticks, head-down. It is re-sprouting now, I picked about 15 baby leaves for my DH lunch today, a salad of Romas and Dom's Sorrento fresh mozzarella with a drizzle of balsamic.

Anyway fuzzy hack your basil back off to the stems and plant some matchsticks. It worked really well, I haven't seen any of those disgusting beetles since.

Cecropia wait to harvest your spagetti squash until the rind is hard, then season at room temp for 2 weeks, then store in your cool basement or root cellar (50 degrees or so). Store with them not touching each other and as long as they don't freeze they should last all winter.

For non producing plants you need to attract some bees. If you plant pansies or marigolds near your veggies you should have better results next year.
