Israel Preparing Attack on Iran?

An Israeli missile test (BBC) fuels speculation that Israel might plan an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities:

Israel has tested a rocket propulsion system from a military base in the centre of the country, the defence ministry said.

Israeli media reports said a ballistic missile had been fired.

The test came amid speculation in Israel that the government could be preparing a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities.

Iran reacted to this (CNN) with a warning:

Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- Iran issued a warning to Israel on Wednesday, with a top military figure saying Iran will "punish" any threat.

"The United States is fully aware that a military attack by the Zionist regime on Iran will not only cause tremendous damage to that regime, but it will also inflict serious damage to the U.S.," said Gen. Hassan Firouzabadi, commander of the joint chiefs of staff, according to the semi-official Fars News Agency.

"We, as the military, take every threat, however distant and improbable, as very real, and are fully prepared to use suitable equipment to punish any kind of mistake," he added, according to a CNN translation of his remarks.

Deutschlandfunk report (German, audio only) with some very detailed information about the topic.

Apparently former members of Israeli national intelligence have made secret plans to attack Iran's nuclear facilities public, which caused a public debate and discussion in Israel.

Israel National News (Arutz Sheva 7) article:

Report: Probe Ordered Into Iran Leaks
It was reported Netanyahu has ordered a probe into leaks about an alleged Iran strike, which will focus on Meir Dagan and Yuval Diskin.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Thursday allegedly ordered a probe into leaks regarding a plan to strike Iran's nuclear program.

The report comes amid a storm of speculation in Israel's media based on unverified claims Netanyahu and Defense Minister Ehud Barak have been lobbying for ministerial support for the strike.

According to the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Jarida, the main suspects in the leaks are the former heads of the Mossad and the Shin Bet, respectively Israel's foreign and domestic intelligence agencies.

Personally, I think when two high-ranked members of Israeli intelligence fear dramatic consequences of such an attack and go out of their way to warn the public about this, then it is a very serious situation indeed.

In the audio report above, it is mentioned that the Hisbollah or people in Syria could use their arsenal of 100,000 rockets against Israel, but I wonder what about Iran itself and all its supporters? In some parts of the Arab world, Iran is regarded as a hero ... and recently revolutionized countries like Lybia (where Gaddhafi's former arsenal is now largely unobserved) have declared their intent to introduce sharia-based law (like Iran has), which could hint at a possible support of Iran in case of war ...

UN Security Council concerns about Lybian stockpile of weapons (BBC) :

The United Nations Security Council has expressed "concern" over the fate of the massive weapons stockpile built up in Libya under Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.

The council called on Libya and its neighbours to stamp out the proliferation of looted arms.

It was worried they could fall into the hands of al-Qaeda and other militant groups.

Many weapons were destroyed in Nato operations, which ended at midnight on Monday.

However, officials said it was not clear how many were still in circulation.

Especially dangerous is Lybia's arsenal, b/c Gaddhafi did have nuclear weapons:

Lybian Nuclear Weapons (Global Security):

Tripoli joined the IAEA in 1963. At one time, some observers classified Libya among the most dangerous countries from the standpoint of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons. But in recent years, concerns about Libyan nuclear ambitions have faded, though apprehensions about Libyan chemical weapons efforts remain very much alive. Libya is in no position to obtain access to nuclear weapons in the foreseeable future, given the extremely limited domestic technical base of the country.

Over the years, Libya's nuclear program's progress has suffered from mismanagement, lack of spare parts, and the reluctance of foreign suppliers to provide assistance, particularly since the UN embargo went into effect in 1992. However, Qadhafi had not abandoned his goal of acquiring a nuclear weapon. He continued to try to develop a Libyan nuclear weapons infrastructure. Despite a 25-year effort to acquire or develop a nuclear weapon, Libya's nuclear program remained in the embryonic stage. Prior to 2003, the U.S. Intelligence Community estimated that Libya would have a deployable weapon by 2007. Subsequent inspections have since refuted that belief. It had succeeded in providing some training to a number of students and technicians and the establishment of a nuclear research center, which includes a small nuclear research reactor under IAEA safeguards. This facility, located at Tajura, southeast of Tripoli, was provided by the former Soviet Union. Since it was unlikely that Tripoli could produce a weapon without significant and sustained foreign technical assistance, Qadhafi reportedly was trying to recruit nuclear scientists to assist in developing nuclear weapons.

Although Gaddhafi gave up his nuclear programme, members of the new Lybian Transitional Council mentioned sometime last week that they have found both nuclear and chemical weapons and asked for international help to remove them.

Lybian Transitional Council finds Gaddhafi's nuclear weapons (RawStory) :

(Update: The rebels found radioactive materials left over from Gaddafi’s uranium enrichment program, according to later reports, which does not meet the technical standard of a “nuclear weapon.” )

In the years leading up to the fall of Col. Muammar Gaddafi, it was not clear to the U.S. or its allies just how far along the Libyan nuclear program had progressed.

Turns out, Gaddafi may have succeeded where other dictators failed: he had nuclear weapons, the Libyan transitional council said Monday.

Gaddafi was thought to have given up his nuclear weapons program in 2004, in an effort to strengthen ties to the west. The Bush administration took Libya off their list of terrorist states in 2006, hailing Gaddafi’s willingness to abandon his pursuit of weapons of mass destruction.

Those weapons have since been discovered, rebels said, along with several undeclared chemical weapons production facilities which are slated to be dismantled.

Mahmoud Jibril, Libya’s interim prime minister, added that his country has no intention of keeping the nuclear weapons, and will ensure alongside allied nations that they are destroyed.

While the report of nuclear weapons had not been verified, they said that International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors would be on site within the week to examine them.

Even if they just found enriched uranium usable for nuclear weapons, it would be a piece of cake (pun intended!) to create one or more atomic bombs or nuclear warheads from it.

The problem with Iran is, they're almost a democratic country. The clerics have much say in the government, which prevents a real democracy from happening. (see article Politics of Iran ).

If Iran would become secular, it would become a much more reliable partner in world politics.

Ahmadinejad is a conservative politician that was approved by the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei of the cleric.

I've read a number of stories written by people who lived in Iran ... many people are yearning for a real democracy.

But how to make this happen?

The 2009 elections almost led to a change ... however, it was rumored that there was election fraud and that the Supreme Leader wouldn't have approved of a different candidate anyway.

The Iranian issue is just as complicated as the relations between Israel and the Palestinians.

Many Arabs still want Israel off the map or at least under Arab administration (b/c the area historically belonged to the Arabs).

The word Arab however is a bit imprecise in this use, b/c Israeli are Arabs too.

The largest problem is probably that the non-Judaic tribes think that the Judaic tribes are under foreign control (namely, the US). But in fact, the diplomacy issues between USA and Israel should have shown sufficiently that that is not the case. Perhaps, b/c so many people immigrated from all over the world to Israel after WWII it is sort of foreign-looking to the remaining Arab countries.

Israel has often aggravated situations by using military force where normal police force would've been sufficient. This is still in the memory of the Arab world.

Israel's current president, Netanyahu, is a center-right-wing politician, which makes a solution difficult. (see Politics of Israel )

Because, you have two conservative heads of state, both in Israel and Iran.

So, if Israel would attack Iran, is nearly impossible to predict the outcome.

Where? In the States? Not sure ...

So far, the US has never been attacked in a war ... but if there was a large scale war in the Middle East, that could change ...

Also, the US has never been under threat to be conquered, but in some scenarios, this could happen as well ... for example, if the US defaults on its debt, some countries could think they want their trillions of dollars back ...

(hey, you know, I'm German, I always worry too much ... ;) )

The IAEA has released a new paper on Iran's nuclear programme, including possible work on atomic bombs that was carried out until 2010.

Also, it mentions that the potential Irani atomic bomb programme comes from Pakistan, which is pretty obvious b/c Pakistan proliferated the technology in the whole region. I've once seen an interview with a former chief of the Pakistani nuclear programme in approx 1995, and he said that it's easy to get everything. (of course he referred to black market activities, which is now apparently confirmed by the IAEA)

This is going to be the war that starts WW3. Iran is being supplied weapons by Russia. And stupid **** Isreal is being well Isreal. They think they are all Holy and special and they can do anything. Plus, they have the backing of the US. So, they are going to start a war and the US is going to get in it which it shouldnt be and then end of the world as we know it. We have no chance against Russia. And eventually Russia is going to get angry and just march on everyone over there and lay waste to that whole region. Not to mention dumb **** Isreal has nukes and WILL use them on Iran. So I am sure Russia will give Iran nukes to fire back with. Its a total mess over there. We need to just nuke Isreal ourselves and be done with it and pull all our troops out of the middle east. There is no point in even being over there. But the US has to keep selling their weapons I guess and protecting their drug crops... It really is sad...

I signed in to reply to this. Why? Because this is beyond frustrating and biased to read. Will it create WW3? No. Why? This **** has been happening for way to long. Sorry to inform you, but threats have been made many times. It happens. Everyone is full of angst. Over in the Middle East, they hate Israel as they want Palestine back. Well, that isn't happening unless they split. Nothing is going to be settle over there because of views. Israel was given the right to the land by Britain. That is their's to keep. The additional land, they won in a war. Just like other countries do in war. The thing is, they gave a majority back because they didn't want too much hostility. They can't do anything. All they do is fend off the bullshit attacks that happen every single day. To them, that's normal. They persevere. The bible is a large part, but at the same time, if it is everyone's holy land why would everyone try to ruin it? They only attack the cities like Tel Aviv and the Jaza Strip. The reason they have backing in the United States is the fact that they play a huge military role for us. They are our eyes and ears over in the middle east. We can trust them and they can trust us apparently like other countires. *COUGH*PAKISTAN and the whole Bin Laden bullshit* As for Russia getting mad? Are you serious? Ok, they supply weapons to them. Who haven't we supplied weapons to? I know for a fact that you will be surprised if you looked at that history. Russia is in good terms with the United States. Sure there are disagreements, bu there are disagreements with family. They hated the Iraq War idea, but they didn't veto it in the UN. So, **** happens like that. Using nukes will also never happen as it will cause a nuclear holocaust and that creates issues. We have the most with about 5,500 nukes. We have a missile that can travel anywhere in an hour that goes faster than speed of sound at mach 5. We are pulling our troops out of the middle east, but it is harder than you think when they are still being shot and killed. All this information, is so half assed and miserable. I'm sorry if you believe this, but honestly read the news and not just the one article you like. I will even give you a non-biased, biggest news aggregate in the world behind Google/Facebook: http://drudgereport.com/ Feel free not to respond as I don't check this site as much as I'd like and probably won't respond unless Brandon shows it to me. You're dumb opinions of just nuking other countries is beyond uneducated and sad that you would even wish such a thing.

I will even give you a non-biased, biggest news aggregate in the world behind Google/Facebook: http://drudgereport.com/

Not speaking for Cerberus, but I think this is simply not true: Drudge Report links to particularly biased and dumb articles from the yellow press ... and it appears to have a right-wing bias ...

EDIT: p.s. the stories that caught my eye have disappeared in the meantime ... they could at least filter out the white noise ...

LMAO.. Ummm So you signed in to spam some crappy sites with highly biased views?? As for as nukes never being used that is just being dillusional. Iran has already stated they will bomb Isreal if they do not stop their crap. And they have Russia supplying them with whatever they want. Its just payback for years ago when the US ****blocked Russia from taking those countries over there. So, now Russia is going to ****block the US. And the US are morons because they conduct war in the least efficent way. So, we go there and waste money and resources in a war we should not be in. Think what you want, but eventually these two small pointless countries will spark off one of the biggest wars this world has ever seen. And its all because the USA backs Isreal. If we did not they would not be acting all crazy. But, as long as we believe they are holy or whatever and back them, the more they will continue to wage war. But, regardless thats funny. I honestly laughed ...So thanks for that at least

Nuking Israel and killing 8 million people certainly wouldn't look good on USA's track record.

Nuking Israel and killing 8 million people certainly wouldn't look good on USA's track record.

It would never happen. We protect them like they are made of gold. And it will always be that way. They have no valued resources. Their country is like worthless land but everyone thinks its the holy land. So stupid..
