One of the world's leading pianists has surprised concertgoers by storming off stage because a fan was filming his performance on a smartphone.

Krystian Zimerman, 56, returned moments later and declared: "The destruction of music because of YouTube is enormous."

He carried on with his recital, but chose not to perform an encore and cancelled a post-concert reception.

On the one hand I can understand why he was angry and I respect his point of view. On the other hand, I'd never go to his concerts and one of the few ways I'd discover his work, let alone his existence, would be through sites such as Youtube. I'd rather have my work noticed than miss out on payment or whatever, although I know in his case he'd been refused work or some such. Still, if you're a leading figure in your interest that work should be plenty.

I wouldn't be phased by that if I was him but then, he must really have a passion for it if he's willing to do that. Clearly his idea of music is very limited though.

as someone who was heavily involved in band for 6 or 7 years, i completely understand why he would react like that. its incredibly disrespectful not only to the musician and all their hard work but also to everyone else in the audience that is trying to enjoy the concert to have a phone light glaring in their eyes. i love going to concerts like that and its more annoying than anything when there are people around being rude.

and then on the youtube comment...well, i guess i have to agree with that as well. it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find work as a classical musician and you have to remember that those people are in fact trying to make a living at what they do, so if it all ending up on youtube, especially without their permission, they will make less and less money for their performances.
