ALAMEDA -- Three teens nearly killed an 18-year-old man over the weekend when they bashed him on the head with a scooter during what may have been part of a robbery spree, police said Monday.

Robert Hoffman, 18, of Hayward and two 17-year-old Alameda boys face charges of attempted murder and robbery in the early Sunday morning attack on an 18-year-old man, said Alameda police Lt. Jim Brock.

The victim, whose name was withheld, was hit in the head with a folded-up scooter without provocation about 12:50 a.m. at Washington School on Taylor Avenue, Brock said. The victim, who had been hanging out with a friend, suffered internal head injuries and is in critical condition at Highland Hospital in Oakland, police said.
