Well, this explains why I can't get my MSN Mail/Hotmail....From MSNBC:
Jan. 24 — Microsoft’s major Web sites have been suffering intermittent outages since midnight ET and continue to have problems. MSN.com, Microsoft.com, Expedia.com and MSNBC.com are among the sites that have been inaccessible to many users. A Microsoft spokesperson said the firm is “still in the diagnose and try to treat phase.” The company doesn’t know when normal service will be restored.
THE PROBLEM STEMS from trouble with Microsoft’s Domain Name Servers, Microsoft spokesperson Adam Sohn said. Those computers match Web surfers’ requests for sites like MSNBC with their underlying number IP address. (MSNBC is a Microsoft - NBC joint venture.)
Sohn said the firm hasn’t ruled out foul play as a source of the problem, but added that technicians working to fix the flaw haven’t had much time to investigate yet.
Some surfers are still able to get to the Microsoft sites, but Sohn said “a very significant number” cannot.
“Servers are coming in and out of availability,” he said, causing the intermittent outages. Also, some networks outside Microsoft cache DNS information — and computers on their networks can still access Microsoft sites.
The shutdown impacts Microsoft’s worldwide Web presence. For example, Microsoft’s United Kingdom site wasn’t working during European morning hours, according to the Wall Street Journal, and still was unavailable for most users at 1 p.m. ET.
The outages follow reports from Attrition.org yesterday that vandals defaced Microsoft’s New Zealand Web site, leaving the taunting message “security wuz broke’n!”
Today’s outage also follows an MSNBC.com report Sunday that some Web surfers heading for Microsoft.com’s Web site were instead sent to MyDomain.com. That problem was also attributed to Domain Name Servers, but in that case, MyDomain’s servers were the cause.
