[Mini Debate] Drunken Minds and Sober Thoughts?

I assume that a lot of you have heard the saying 'Drunken minds speak sober thoughts, but what I want to know is how many of you believe the statement and why?

Obviously alcohol can bring out a more... courageous side that allows people to say things with less fear of the consequences. But surely someone who avoids saying something when sober will try to avoid it when drunk, also?

I can't really get my head around it, as people act differently with their consumption of alcohol. But what do you think?

Haha! Jean-Jacques Rousseau said that, and he was himself quite the drunk fellow.

I don't think it is totally true; alcohol is a complicated drug which affects the whole brain in many ways.
I don't think it makes our genuine self more visible; it just makes us incredibly dumber. We lose our inhibition, yes, but it's not the same thing.

Of course, this is not true in all cases. For instance, sometimes you're only courageous enough to admit something to someone whilst you've had some alcohol. Like the "I love yous" and whatnot.
On the other hand, there are things you wouldn't do if you were sober. For instance, proposing to a stranger, or mistaking your door for your neighbour's.

It's a strange debate purely because of how different people are - but then I've known a few people to fake being drunk to almost 'get away with' saying/doing what they did. Which just adds to the confusion really.

i believe people lose fear and whatever keeps them from saying things...

also, i've had more debates when i am drunk than when i am sober. in university, most of us seem to develop a brain to actually discuss things racionally.... i find it amusing.
