Ok I think my modem is messed up.

Problem #1 - When ever Im on the internet, if i have more then 1-2 windows running I get disconnected quite often. Now im using our school's dial up, which I know isnt the best (but hey its free), but I shouldnt be getting disconnected as often as I do. Now it seems to happen most when im running ICQ and winamp.

Problem #2 - when i sign off the internet, i have to re-start my computer or else my programs dont run right, and sounds wont play they just kinda do a beep beep beep beep etc instead of just going beep.

Am I right in thinking this is my modem . . . or is it something else (help would be good0

I have to ask the obvious... Are you using a Winmodem? If yes, that explains everything.
If you're going to be using dial-up, spend the money on a hardware modem. It's just not worth the headaches to use a Winmodem anymore.

A winmodem is a modem that requires Windows to run. The reason why is that the modem processing is done on the main CPU and not on a signal processor on board the modem (none exists on a winmodem). This means that a driver must be written to handle the signal processing, and that has only been done for the Microsoft OS platforms. A hardware modem will run in LINUX and does all of the processing on board the modem (thus freeing up your CPU to do other tasks). A winmodem will not run in LINUX. Check your documentation to see. U.S. Robotics are top notch for hardware modems. As for winmodems, I've had outstanding luck with Lucent winmodems.

Prox, my advice would be to go here for the latest drivers for your modem. There are some good sections regarding tweaking and optimizing your winmodem. Hope this helps.

JH> It's no longer the case that a Winmodem won't work in Linux. They've gotten drivers for Linux written that will allow it to function. However, these are open source drivers, and not those provided by the manufacturer.

Prox> The reason your modem is likely disconnecting is because, as JH said, the main CPU is being used to operated the modem, as opposed to a DSP chip on the modem handling those functions.
If an application you're using, or the OS, requires too much processing power, then the modem isn't getting the CPU power it needs to continue maintaining the connection, so it drops.

In your case, you noticed that it seems to happen most often when you're running WinAMP and ICQ. That's a tell-tale sign.

Well I updated the drivers and things went downhill from there. For somereason my computer is now freezing every time I Disconnect from the internet, My startup was fubar'd and things are just plain wierd. Does anyone have any bright ideas on what this may be. I tried re-installing the old drivers, but that didnt fix the problem. I was thinking that I might have picked up a virus somewhere. If no one has any better Ideas Im thinking that I will be re-formatting my computer tomarrow morning and starting from scrach. Things were working deacent untill today, now . . . BAH. Anythoughts would be great

Most Winmodem's I've seen won't let you do something as simple as updating the driver without using some sort of uninstall program to remove all of the previous drivers.
Rather than putting so much time and effort into troubleshooting into fixing the Winmode, I hate to tell you that the best solution is to probably go buy a hardware-based modem. It will save you a ton of time and headaches, and will result in a smoother ride later on.

Just as an example of how much of a PITA Winmodems are, a friend of mine bought one of the original Sony VAIO PCs when they came out. It was like a P-200MMX or something with a 33.6 Winmodem. When he tried upgrading to a 56k US Robotics hardware modem, the PC wouldn't even detect the new card. After going through troubleshooting for about 2 weeks, it was finally discovered that we had to use a special program, provided by USR, to uninstall all of the software components of the Winmodem. After running that program and rebooting, the PC detected and set up the USR 56k modem without a hitch.

My advice: get the thing out of your PC as fast as you can!

Problem A - I only have $50 to my name at the moment, and that kinda has an obligation to keep food in my stomach before I fix my modem
Problem B - Im only using a modem for another week then im all about the school's connection for the remainder of the year.

Now I woke up this morning and rational took over a bit, and I thought that just deleting windows and re-installing that might get the job done. Wouldnt that get rid of all devices and let me start from scratch (and therefore go back to the old drivers that worked just fine)? I dont exactly want to re-format my computer, but i guess it wouldnt be the worse thing to happen to me.
