"You do not choose your country so it is silly to be proud of being born there."

Do you guys think it's ok to be proud of your own country? Do you think waving flags or singing a national anthem is just silly?

Taking pride in the achievements of a sports team you choose to support is still better than being proud of your country. Where you are born is totally random, at least with a sports team you've made the right choice in supporting them if they're successful.

It's fine, but in terms of sport look at the fans that celebrate through negative actions. Such as fighting fans of the other team - aka, everyone in Glasgow. That's why I can't feel pride when it comes to football matches.

My father goes on and on and on about how Britain are amazing, the "yanks" are idiots etc. It's quite tiresome and annoying to listen to, and partly why I've never established a mindset of being proud of my own country. The way I see it is this - every country has some good and bad; in the past, present and undoubtedly in the future. They will do things right, and they will do things wrong, just like an individual human-being. I'm not going to sing praise for Britain but neither am I going to slander it, and that goes for every other one too.

I think the whole waving of flags and singing is all a bit silly, personally, but I take no issue with nor do I hold a negative opinion of people who chose to do such things. I just don't see a country as something to be proud about.

I don't think it's silly. Being born there makes you part of that country so it's only fair to support it. Of course, it's just as okay not too but it doesn't hurt to be patriotic. I'm proud to be British and I'd happily support my country, even when a lot of the ways it's run infuriates me. :)

Tbh it's always annoyed me when people say they're proud of something they have no control over because I think you should just be proud of your achievements :D
Like "I'm proud to be a girl" oh so you made yourself into a girl? Lame example and bad wording ik but I didn't want to offend anybody x

I think waving flags and singing national anthems is nice though, showing support to your country :)

I know what I mean anyway ;o

Patriotism is one thing, Nationalism is another.

Being proud of where you come from / where you live is totally fine. And it's okay to show that you are proud of that.
Being proud to the point of actually believing your country is just inherently superior is another.

Although I suppose technically there are different ideas as to what Nationalism is, but regardless of that... the point is that you can be prideful of your country, but you don't have to look down on others because of it.
Patriotism is just the love/devotion of ones country. Even if it is random that you happened to be born there... so what? Does that mean you can't love where you were born? What's wrong with having pride in your birth place?

You can have pride in your country itself, even if there's a lot wrong with it. I, for one, love where I was born. I love being American, I love being a Texas, what I don't love is the city area I was born around and the couple of cities/towns I grew up in. So I don't love my city area, but I do have some pride in it because of the ****in' Arts District it has. But that's about the extent of my pride for it.
As for my country and state, hell the **** yeah I have pride for it, I love it! I love where I was born and I wouldn't change it for anything, I love it too much.

And yes I do wave flags around, it's fun to show off the pride and faith you have to the place you were born and presumably raised. If it's not your thing, that's cool, but I find it fun and refreshing to know not everyone hates my country and state even though they were born and raised here themselves.
And just because I love where I was born and raised doesn't mean I don't have complaints, but just because it's not perfect doesn't mean I'm going to hate it, it means I want what is best for it. That's all.

So, yeah, basically I'm saying there's not a **** thing wrong with it. If it's not your thing, that's cool, no one is making you participate or anything, but for other people they are just happy to be born and raised where they were and they wanna show it. Nothing wrong with that. Some people don't care one way or the other, some care too much and think they're country is superior, others outright hate the country they were born and raised in. It varies all over the place. That sorta thing tends to happen when people have different opinions on certain things.

As for me though, I obviously see nothing wrong with it. I am who I am because of where I was born and raised, among other reasons, so yeah I have pride in that. But you can be proud of where you were born and raised for any reason really, for me it's just the sheer fact that it was me where was born and raised here. It's not perfect, but it's home. So I guess to to me the fact that's random is why I have pride in it, out of all the places I could have been born, I was born here.

Although it's not really random, is it? My family all made the various choices to live here. So, yeah. It's because of them I was born here after all.

Pride is such a dirty word to me, I don't like using it.

I think last year a study showed that people who flew the Australian flag on their cars on Australia Day were more likely to hold racist views. As if we needed a study to show that.

I have mixed feelings now lmao.

I'm good with being patriotic as in, yay! Britain won the Olympics/Wimbledon and so forth. However, I'm not bothered if we lose anything and I'm not bothered about flying flags or singing anthems or anything.
I like the idea of a unified country, a stable and good country where the anthem signifies that, as does the flag. I don't feel it symbolises that right now though so I don't really care very much?
I'm not proud per se, just grateful to be born somewhere that isn't a 3rd world country.

I don't really know how I feel. I'm not proud to be British, because that's all it is, a nationality. I'd be proud if only Britons held a particular amazing thing like, only Britons can sing! But then I'd be like..why not other countries? :(

I'm rambling,
There's nothing to be proud of in my eyes, but I like it when Britian do well and show support for Britons because its just become something you learn and do from a young age.

You don't choose your family either but you can your friends there is not much difference. Do you reject your family?
