Introduction:
LCD monitor technology has just recently advanced far enough to allow for significant advances in quality, and significant drops in price. The LCD1765 is aimed at the gaming crowd, with extreme portability and an excellent price. This LCD is NEC’s bid at following this trend of low priced high quality panels.
Features/ Installation:
The LCD1765’s modern styling makes it look more like a piece of art than a high performance LCD monitor. It has sleek aluminum styling, highlighted by a black frame around the panel. Here are four views of the monitor:

Out of the box installation is simple and straight forward, and the LCD is clearly encased in some very solid packaging. The box includes the LCD itself, the power adaptor, and one analog cable. Yes, that’s correct, the LCD comes with only a analog cable, which really isn’t much of a problem considering the exceptionally crisp and clear video.
The LCD also packs some impressive specs:
-Viewable Image Size: 17”
-Active Matrix, TFT Screen
-Pixel Pitch: 0.264mm
-Native Resolution: 1280 x 1024
-16.7 million colors
-Video Input: Analog 0.7 Vp-p/75 Ohms (D-Sub)
-Warranty: 1-Year Parts and Labor, 1-Year Backlight
-16.6 in (W) x 15.3 in (H) x 9.6 in (D)
-Net (with stand): 13.2 lbs. / 6.0 kg
Detailed Features/ Testing:
The LCD has an extremely simple onscreen menu, controlling all of the settings of the monitor. There are only 5 buttons; Power, Autosynch, Up, Down, and Menu. However, I didn’t even need to adjust the settings at all, since the monitor automatically synched itself when I powered it on the first time.
The video quality itself is some of the best I have seen in a sub $500 LCD, with vibrant colors, and crisp and clear images. My one problem with the video quality though, was the poor grayscale contrast. The lighter grays looked almost washed out, however, the darker grays look very on target. Aside from the problem with the grays, the refresh rate of the LCD is exceptional, at 16ms. This will allow you to play your favorite movies and games without fear of often distracting and visually displeasing ghosting.
All in all, the monitor has a very simple and user friendly design, with only 5 buttons and extremely well designed on screen menus. Not only that, but the monitor is designed to be extremely portable, as it folds flat down onto the stand to allow for easier carrying. The hinges of the LCD are way too tight though, and make folding and adjusting the panel quite a task. It also would’ve been nice if they had included some kind of a handle.
To protect the very delicate LCD screen from damage, NEC has incorporated a built-in screen protector made out of clear Plexiglas into the LCD panel. This is a very innovative feature that I would like to see included in other LCDs. It very efficiently protects your monitors from inadvertent pokes and prods that may do serious damage to the screen, and it also makes cleaning infinitely easier.

Conclusion:
Over all, the LCD1765 is a very well designed monitor that has an easy setup, and seemingly flawless operation. Although it stays stylishly simple and user friendly, it incorporates a few key features that a gamer, and just a normal user can appreciate. Although it is clearly aimed at the high performance LANing gamer, it also makes to be an excellent all around LCD, excelling at word processing and high performance video alike.
The few rough edges it has are easily forgotten because of the superb video, and excellent overall design.
Pro’s:
-Excellent video quality
-Simple, user friendly design
-Very stylish and portable design
Con’s:
-Weak lighter grays
-Stand is too hard adjust and fold
-Could’ve used a built in handle
