Well, I'm glad it happened now, rather than later.
There was some serious bug floating around in my install of Win2k, because all of a sudden, it wouldn't let me update monitor INFs or video card drivers.
In MS's infinite wisdom, they have a generic error message when it encounters an error when installing a driver.
"An error was encountered during the driver installation. The specified file could not be found."
Of course, it doesn't have anywhere where you can actually find out WHICH file couldn't be found.
This left me with nothing more than Default Monitor running on VGA card, which left me at 640x480x16 color @ 60Hz, which hurt the crap out of my eyes in the 10 minutes I was looking at it.
Reformatted, resinstalled.
The system was detected as Standard PC this time, and the install went as smoothly as can be. Didn't even have to deal with the crackling sound problem this time.
With everything loaded and patched, I'm just about cracking 5000 3D Marks on 3DMark 2000, which still seems slow to me, but it's about 20% faster than the system pre-reinstall.
