Toyota's redesigned RAV4 small SUV got the worst-possible score in an especially demanding crash test by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

The 2013 RAV4 got a "poor" ranking in what the IIHS calls the "front small overlap" test.

Nonetheless, it scored "good" -- IIHS' top ranking -- in the four other types of crash tests, and earned a Top Safety Pick designation from the insurance industry trade organization.

The top-rated small SUVs are the 2014 Subaru Forester and 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander, which are rated Top Safety Pick Plus, the organization's highest award. Forester was rated "good" in the small overlap test and Outlander Sport "acceptable." Both were "good" in all other categories.

IIHS says it was testing small SUVs earlier this year and Toyota asked it to temporarily exclude the new RAV. Toyota said it was making some changes to RAV4s built after April that it thought would improve the vehicle's performance in the offset test. IIHS says it routinely will delay testing a vehicle if design changes are imminent.

The organization previously published results for the other small SUVs it tested and now is reporting the RAV4's scores.
