Does anyone know where the best place to get a good (cheap) notebook would be? I don't really have the time to check back here that much in the next few days, so if you have any ideas for me, please email me at lacy_leblanc@hotmail.com or lleblanc@johnsoave.com . Thanks

there was a Sony Viao i saw at best buy that was $1400.. duron 800 128MB ram.. 10GB HD.. i thought that was a pretty good price *shrug*.. i dunno specific places that would be better to look for laptops
Generally, Sony computers are very overpriced for what you get. $1400 for a Duron laptop sounds high. I didn't realize they were using the Duron and Athlon for laptops yet because of their high power consumption.
Of course, I'd have to see the specs of the laptop to see if that price is high or not.

they released mobile durons early last month and announced the availability of mobile athlon4's at that time as well.. think i've seen toshiba's and sony's w/ mobile durons.. i realize that sony's are usually overpriced.. in fact.. i keep ****ing at people about it.. but this one was $1400 after a crap load of rebates.. a 800Mhz p3 (compaq) was um.. i think $200 more and the rest of the specs was the same as the sony
Just for the record, I have a top-of-the-line Compaq Armada M700, and I absolutely hate the thing. The basic features are what you should look for (14" TFT, 128MB, lightweight, etc.), but it's clear they cut corners wherever they could.
Now, I can't really complain since it was given to me by my job, but I can save people from spending THEIR money on this POS. I'd spend my own money on an IBM ThinkPad if I were in the market for a laptop.
A friend of mine was just in the market for an ultra-portable that was going to be used for PowerPoint presentations on the road. He ended up finding a ThinkPad A21e for $1500 without having to deal with any rebates(his budget was only up to $1600, tops). Celeron 700, 64MB, 15" TFT, 5lbs., 24x, etc.
Sure, he skimped a little on the CPU and RAM, but the CPU is more than fast enough for his needs, and the RAM can be upgraded for very cheap. I don't know of any other laptop where you can get that size screen in that price range. A similarly spec'ed Dell Inspiron 4000 series came to $1800, so I'd say he got a **** good deal. And I'd take IBM over Dell any day of the week in terms of quality, support, and stability.

for the record.. i do like the IBM's.. haven't seen the latest models in a while.. i do currently like the HP models as well.. i'm just waiting for them to come out w/ a model using a duron/athlon4 chip before i make my final decision.. i really don't need a laptop.. more of something i'd like to have to fool around w/
