Waukesha - A photo and personal information of an undercover Waukesha County sheriff's detective were posted several months ago without his knowledge on a dating Web site for gay men, officials said Monday.

Detective Peter Korns, who is married, became aware of the Web site when a man called his home to respond to the personal ad.

Korns immediately looked up the site for gay singles, which displayed a photo of him in a dress shirt, wearing a shoulder holster with his handgun. The entry described him as "a broke cop with no morals."

A subpoena filed Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court says that the Sheriff's Department, in late May had sought information related to the posting from the operators of the California-based Web site.

The photo and information were subsequently removed from the site.

Korns on Monday declined to comment.

Sheriff's Lt. Chuck Wood said Korns' reaction was: "Someone is yanking my chain, and it went too far. I don't want an investigation, but I want you to know it's there, and I'm not responsible for it."

Posting someone's photo and personal information may not be a crime, Wood said, but defamation could be argued in a civil case.

Wood said sheriff's officials were concerned that someone in the department may have provided the photo for the Web site, which would have have been a violation of department policy. If someone in the department was involved, he said, that individual could be disciplined.
