PIG poo could soon power Australian homes and businesses.
Australian Pork Ltd (APL) today won a $150,000 federal government grant to look at ways of turning pig waste into electricity.
The project will examine mixing warm pig manure and water to produce biogas.
The biogas can then be either burnt directly for heating or used as a form of power.
APL plans to carry out its research project in piggeries across Australia, although a firm timeframe has yet to be established.
Some smallscale biogas plants have been trialled with piggeries and dairies previously, in an endeavour to both create power and also cut odours.
Agriculture Minister Warren Truss said the project would not only bring environmental benefits to the pig industry, it would also be an economic boost.
He said the project fitted well into the Government's efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
