I don't know about the rest of you, but I am disgusted by the conventions. In years past America went into the convention season not knowing who would be chosen. Now all the opponents give up by June or July. The States never even get to go through the motions of saying, "The great state of Utah gives 14 electoral votes to the next presidient of...etc."
Plus it is disgusting that so much money is donated by corporations and we aren't even told which ones. I wasn't so much offended by the fact that the conventions accepted all the money, but that the polititions didn't have a problem with it. Generally a politition should at least be good at not being seen near unfavorable things (I might say coruption here, but feel that is too strong). I have and example of this: In 1996 I attended a rally for Dole-Kemp at the University of Buffalo. I went because Kemp was my former congressman and my sister's high school band was playing and the band director gave me tickets. It was obvious that Dole was trying not to be seen too close the D'Amato (The corrupt and seemingly evil, former senator from NY). He tried to always be as far away as could and still be on the podium. Gore is doing the same thing by picking a conservative runningmate who spoke out against Clinton's indiscretions.
The people of the United States should be disgusted, by the opulence of the Republican convention especially. A fleet of limos available 24 hours a day (where do they need to be going that late anyway). Making public piers private for the fireworks. Private parties in Corporate Yachts. Of course they are not outraged at least the polititions don't think so as they are not worried enough to boycott.
My conclusions:
Soft-money donations should be illegal. Political conventions should be eliminated. The candidates should be provided with airtime to say to the people whatever they want to get accross. This could be done just as easily from a living room or a park bench or wherever. All they are going to say is worthless retoric anyway. (Do you really think Bush will be good for minorities? You might think that however after watching the carefully crafted convention.)
