heya> got a quick qextion for y'all. my fil has an hp pavillion computer that - for the life of me - i can not get to defrag past 10%.

i hit ctl - alt - del and shut down all the stuff that was running except explorer before running defrag and it still only goes to 10%.

any suggestions? this is annoying the crap out of me.

the same thing happens when i try to run scan disk - it tells me other stuff is running.

thanks.

Do you have any kind of networking going on where a drive might be getting accessed remotely?

Another thing you can try is booting up in safe mode, running scandisk, then rebooting and running defrag.
