Time to use democracy to protect your rights.

Yesterday, a bill was introduced to the Senate that could seriously infringe on your personal rights when it comes to music, movies, and the Internet.

News of this bill has circulated referencing several different names: The Digital Millenium Copyright Act, the Security Systems Standards and Certification Act, and is now known as the Consumer Broadband and Digital Television Promotion Act.

The most damaging part of this act is its attack on Fair Use rights. Among other things, it would make it illegal for you to make a recording of a CD which you have purchased so that you could listen to it in your car, walkman, or mp3 player. Until now, this practice has been legal under your Rights To Fair Use under the Audio Home Recording Act.

While most major media companies are, in fact, against such legislation, the bill was introduced by Disney, through their congressional sponsor, Sen. Fritz Hollings, (D - S.C.).

This is blatantly a misguided attempt by a large media company to affect law that would protect their intellectual property at the expense of the consumer.

A website has been set up to help citizens speak out for their rights in this matter.

http://www.digitalconsumer.org/

The site has excellent information on the bill, including specific information as to how it could impact you and why it's dangerous to consumers in it's current form, as well as a link that will allow you to submit a letter to your congressmen voicing your opinions against the CBDTPA.

If you agree that the CBDTPA is not reasonable legislation, I urge you to read through the information at DigitalConsumer.org and submit a letter to your congressmen requesting that they vote against the CBDTPA.

I took a look at that, too. How outrageous...the government is intruding more and more into our private lives...

Yikes. :(

Wish there was something I could do to help..

...but I guess this is one of the times I'm **** glad to be in Australia.

Done . . . hopefully this doesnt get passed.

An ironic sidenote: Part of the reason they changed the name from the SSSCA to the CBDTPA is because the SSSCA got so much negative reaction.
I guess they thought that by changing the name, it would take it out of the spotlight. Unfortunately, they changed nothing besides the name, so the content of the bill is identical to what got so much negative press as the SSSCA.

Unfortunately, what gets put in the channel doesn't automatically make it here. ;)

yeah i get lazy sometimes.. well.. most of the time

:hmph: Holy Cow!!! :sfrown: Thatz shocking!!!!!!!!!! :ticked:

Fight it guys... Wish I could help but being an Aussie I don't really think anyone would listen cause it wouldn't affect me.
