Getting out of the gloomy rain and into a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan R/T proved just the right way to ring in the New Year for the family.

It didn’t hurt that the daytime high in San Diego hovered around the 80 Fahrenheit mark, nor that the only cloud in the sky was the morning marine fog layer so typical of California’s southern coastline in winter.

In fact, the only downside of doing a whirlwind, family getaway weekend was the lack of a Nav unit in the Grand Caravan, as the itinerary was packed full of short drives from our downtown hotel to the numerous family attractions San Diego is famous for, including the Zoo, SeaWorld and Legoland. The latter was the longest trip of the weekend, and at less than 45 minutes north on Highway 5 to Carlsbad, it proved a welcome opportunity to stretch the legs of the R/T version of Dodge’s iconic minivan. Likewise, returning south along Highway 101, through the classic California surf towns of Encinitas and Solana Beach demonstrated the comfort and handling of the 2012 Grand Caravan.

There was certainly more than enough room to stretch out inside the spacious seven-seater, from the large and well-bolstered front seats through to the third row bench, made all the easier to access thanks to the patented Super Stow ‘N’ Go second and third row seating.
