Talented, but troubled, actor Robert Downey Jr. was arrested late Saturday night in Palm Springs, California and charged with possession of cocaine and methamphetamine. Released from prison on drug charges just three months ago, it seemed as if he were making a new start after landing a recurring role on the popular TV show "Ally McBeal" where he plays Ally's new love interest. On Saturday night, police responded to an anonymous 911 call that indicated there were drugs and guns in a hotel room at the Merv Griffin Resort. When officers responded, they found 35-year-old Downey alone in the room with the cocaine and methamphetamine. He was arrested without incident. Within hours, he was bailed out of jail for $15,000. Downey was arrested three times in 1996, and in June 1999, he admitted he had violated his probation by failing to submit to drug testing. He was incarcerated at the California State Prison until August 2000 when he was freed on $5,000 bail after an appeals court ruled a lower-court judge had erred in sentencing him. The appeal court judge ruled that Downey had served more than enough time to fulfill his prison term for drug possession. Upon his release, the actor checked himself into a residential "after-care treatment" program near Los Angeles.

Mo's got a point. It's when people start f*cking up other people's lives that the law really needs to step in. However, I think they should stick his **** in rehab again. When he's not filming or some such.

I agree Taz -- I heard this morning that he's back on the set of Ally McBeal today taping another episode. That's so tacky and unjust to me. I hate how Hollywood is treated like a selected elite, allowed to exist above the law that we "plain American citizens" are bound under.

Is his career over? Maybe. Maybe not. Actor Robert Downey Jr. has returned to work on the set of "Ally McBeal," following his arrest Saturday night in Palm Springs, California on drug charges. He was freed on $15,000 bail on Sunday morning. A woman named Laura Burnett spent Thanksgiving with Downey and described him as being depressed because he was not with his family. Downey has a 7-year-old son, Indio, who bears a remarkable resemblance to him. "He was really down most of the time," Burnett said, but he wasn't always sad. "He did a lot of role playing for us from 'Chaplin," and a few of his movies. He was actually fun to be around," she said. Downey was nominated for an Oscar for his 1992 screen biography of the famed silent film comedian. Now he's is back to work on the set of "Ally McBeal" where he plays Ally's new love interest. Fox executives said there was a possibility that Downey's recurring role could be extended beyond the eight episodes he already has filmed and the two additional segments he has agreed to make. "Nobody has closed the door on the possibility of his coming back later in the season," said Sandy Grushow, chairman of the Fox Entertainment Television Group. "There could be more. Right now we don't have a deal with him."
