WASHINGTON - Candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger had egg on his face for ducking a debate yesterday — and egg on his shoulder after someone in a crowd threw one at him.
The would-be California governor laughed it off, asking for bacon as well and shrugging off his soiled tan blazer, but it was harder for the action star to shake accusations he's too chicken to debate.
The Republican front-runner was a no-show as the other major candidates met last night inthe Bay Area at the first of a series of forums before an Oct. 7 recall election.
Schwarzenegger has agreed to a single debate, on Sept. 24 — one in which the candidates get the questions in advance.
"He's a sissy is what I'm saying," said Richie Ross, political strategist for Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, who hastopped Schwarzenegger in some polls. "He's a scaredy-cat."
National Democratic Party chairman Terry McAuliffe told reporters Schwarzenegger "ought to be a man" and quit ducking.
Realizing he appeared to be walking on eggshells, Schwarzenegger's campaign asked the organizers of the Sept. 24 debate to switch from handing out questions. But the California Broadcasters Association refused, saying that was the agreed-upon format.
While other leading candidates debated last night in Walnut Creek, outside San Francisco, taking potshots at the Terminator, Schwarzenegger addressed a cheering crowd at California State University in Long Beach.
