Self-driving vehicle technology has not yet reached a level where in it could be authorized for use by the public in general driving says the U.S. Department of Transportation in a recommendation to state governments. Following this, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration introduced new guidelines to states for self-driving cars, which urges them to use self-driven cars strictly for testing. In case the state takes the decision to permit operation of self-driving vehicles apart from testing, then it should require safeguards in order to make sure they can be taken over by a driver, during a malfunction.

This was conveyed on Thursday through a preliminary statement of policy on automated vehicles by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A licensed driver needs to be accessible round the clock to operate the vehicle in case in a situation where in automated technology fails to safely control the vehicle. “As innovation in this area continues and the maturity of self-driving technology increases, we will reconsider our present position on this issue,” the agency said. Any potential regulatory action should balance the requirement to ensure motor vehicle safety with the flexibility to innovate, it added.
